Arrowhead Park

Wake up at 8.30, this is really late for me. Try and make coffee using the coffee maker, not quite getting it right, but now know what to do next time. After a very quick breakfast I need to go to the Permit Office to check into the park. Using the map we picked up last night, and a bit of guesswork, I find my way first to the park store. The tracks through the woods are mostly unsigned and a bit disorientating.

I book a canoe for two at three at the park store

Lake Arrowhead before the crowds descend

After booking in I manage to retrace my steps back to our camping pitch.

Sitting writing yesterday's account we are visited by a variety of birdlife, Bluejays

Woodpeckers

Red Squirrels

After lunch we walk through the woods, down to the lake, and eventually pick up our boat.

Paddling is great fun, but we have trouble keeping a straight line. We do a circuit of the lake

We think this is a Yellow Billed Loon, keeping a close eye on us

If you're going to see a goose, make it a Canada Goose

The view back to the lake

Despite being advised that the wood available at the park would be rubbish, we pick up a bag of logs. With the axe kindly loaned by Curtis I cut some up for kindling and make a fire 🔥. The wood is reluctant to take light, there is much hissing and wheezing as the moisture is slowly driven off

The fire eventually takes life

Only to die back to a very unconvincing slow smouldering smoke

It eventually gets going, and Vera cooks steak and sausages, which we eat with salad and bread

Washed down with cold Ontario beer
