Quebec City II

This morning we meet Coco the feline social media influencer with nearly 30K followers. If you have Instagram you can follow him @KingPopoTheCat. It's a strange world

We have booked on a St Lawrence River cruise, but have some time before we sail. So have a quick look round the Roman Catholic cathedral. This has one of the seven Holy Doors that exist in the world.

If you enter through this doorway, then all of your sins committed to date are cancelled. Simple as that. Or possibly you just get reduced time in purgatory, I'm not entirely sure, I haven't studied the small print. The door is locked and sealed today, it is only opened every 25 years or so or when the church needs more money, so we depart as burdened as we arrived

The boat trip takes us to see the Montmorency Falls, higher than though less spectacular than Niagara.

The name Quebec is derived from an Algonquin word meaning the place where the the river narrows. The view from the water highlights this, and how Quebec's location allows control over traffic on the river and access to the American interior. The reason for all of those battles and sieges becomes clear

The river is still a major transport route

After the cruise we head for the Museum of Civilisation, where we want to look at their enticingly named Oh Shit! exhibition. This covers all aspects of the subject, health, sanitation, the evolution of the toilet, the use of the Bristol Scale to measure poo quality, etc. I also learn that Canadians don't pay for domestic water supplies, and that a lot of towns here still dump their waste directly into rivers and waterways. We are the only people booked onto the English speaking tour of the exhibition, so we feel very privileged to have a personal guide.

We also look round a very good Pompeii exhibition, and wish we'd had more time at the First Nations rooms. In fact we could and should have spent an entire day at this museum, it is that good.

The streets are busier this evening than on Tuesday or Wednesday, perhaps building up to tomorrow's Canada Day
