Wings

Last night we had a lift back to Mike's flat from Steve. When I wake, somewhat groggily, in the morning I find that my camera is missing. This holiday has been a catalogue of lost items, my phone in Niagara, my camera in Bon Echo where a young lad spotted it and then found us to return it, and my camera again now. It's either in Steve's car or in Gina and Ian's backyard so I'm not unduly worried.

Bo phones mid morning to ask whether I've had chicken wings yet, or whether we have them in the UK. No to both questions, so we arrange to meet up for lunch and wings.

Gina, Bo, George, Steve and Slavka meet us for lunch, Bo scooping us up on her way. Chicken wings are ordered by the pound weight, and have a wide variety of sauces and seasonings. I opt for lemon pepper, which is a dry finish but amazingly lemony and zesty. Vera goes for garlic honey, gooey and sweet. Excellent potato skins also, perfectly crisp on the outside light and fluffy inside

Steve takes this group photo. His party trick when offering to take photos of strangers is to include a selfie of himself in the set of pictures. I didn't think he would manage that so easily with a camera rather than a smartphone, but I've clearly underestimated him

Bo shows us round the parts of her house suitable for public viewing. There is a lot of rewiring work being done which disrupts everything. But we will have a point for comparison for next year

A somewhat slow and uneventful afternoon, a day after the night before feeling. Vera and I go for a walk through Green Acres Park to Battlefield Park. She used to go to Green Acres School, which is still there looking unchanged. It seems deserted as a school, the classrooms empty of furniture. There is even what we assume to be a homeless person living on the school roof - a much safer and secure location than being at ground level

We also meet a couple of women foraging for leaves in the park. They explain that they are collecting vine leaves which they will stuff with rice and freeze. I remember the historical information we read back in Montreal, how the new and inexperienced arrivals would be taught how to prepare for the long Canadian winter. It's somehow reassuring to know that these activities still continue

Sat out on Mike's 6th floor balcony in the evening - it's cooler than being inside. Dark clouds are gathering, and it feels as though a storm is coming. A gentle rain starts falling just before we go to bed
